Tea science is a traditional strength of Anhui Agricultural University. The discipline traces its origin to the Tea Specialization Program of the College of Agriculture, Fudan University, founded in 1939, and is widely regarded as the cradle of tea science in China. The Laboratory has grown out of the tea science laboratory established by the renowned tea scientists Professors Wang Zenong and Chen Chuan. It was approved as a Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (1997), of Anhui Province (1998) and of the Ministry of Education (2003). On January 20, 2015, it was approved as a State Key Laboratory jointly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology and Anhui Province; in November 2016, the Ministry of Education approved the establishment of the International Joint Laboratory on Tea Chemistry and Health; and in March 2018 it became one of the first ten Anhui Provincial Laboratories. The Laboratory has been selected as an innovation team of the Ministry of Education's "Program for Innovative Research Teams" and as a "Huang Danian-style Faculty Team" of Chinese universities, and has been honored as an "Advanced Collective of Professional and Technical Talents in China" and an "Advanced Collective of the National Education System". In 2024, relying on Anhui Agricultural University and building on the State Key Laboratory of Tea Plant Biology and Utilization, the Laboratory completed its reorganization into a national key laboratory together with the Tea Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Hunan Agricultural University, and in December of the same year it was approved as the National Key Laboratory of Tea Plant Germplasm Innovation and Resource Utilization.
The National Key Laboratory currently has 152 full-time staff members, 133 of whom hold senior professional titles. It is home to 12 national-level talents and 14 scientists appointed to the China Agriculture Research System for the tea industry (including one chief scientist). Guided by the "Four Orientations" and serving the national strategies of rural revitalization, "Healthy China" and the Belt and Road Initiative, the Laboratory focuses on breeding major new varieties with high quality and efficiency, multiple resistance, mechanization suitability and "specialized and specific" traits, as well as on the high-value utilization of tea resources. It carries out scientific research and develops new technologies and products in the areas of tea germplasm evaluation and creation, secondary metabolism and its regulation, breeding techniques and variety cultivation, and tea processing and high-value utilization. The Laboratory is committed to building a new highland of world-class fundamental tea science, a main base for gathering and cultivating talents, a source of scientific and technological innovation and achievement transformation, and a center for international exchange and cooperation, thereby forging the national strategic force in science and technology for the tea industry and leading the high-quality development of China's tea industry.
