Professor Chen is a PhD supervisor of Tea Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences; chief scientist of germplasm resources collection and evaluation of National Tea Industry Technology System, chief scientist of Tea Germplasm Resources Innovation Team of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences; Deputy editor of Horticulture Research and managing editor of Beverage Plant Research. He has won 6 ministerial and provincial-level second place prizes, has registered and authorized more than 20 new cultivars of tea plant, has formulated 8 international, national and industrial standards related to tea resource breeding. He has published 3 academic monographs and more than 60 SCI papers in journals such as Nature Communications, among which, 3 have been selected as ESI highly cited articles. He was appointed 3 times as an Honorary Scientist and Advisor by the Korea Rural Development Administration (RDA).
